BSJ's Primary 'Discover' Programme

BSJ’s Primary ‘Discover’ Programme

BSJ has recently introduced the ‘Discover’ Programme, an innovative and child-centred approach to learning for students in Year One to Year Six. The programme is designed to offer a creative and forward-thinking way of learning that goes beyond the traditional curriculum. One unique aspect of the ‘Discover’ Programme is that it is mixed-age within the year groups, allowing students between the ages of 5 and 11 to learn collaboratively. This provides an opportunity for students to develop their own learning pathways.

Questions & Answers about our Discover Programme

  • What is Discover?

Discover is a unique programme that provides students in Year One to Year Six with an opportunity to develop their learning pathway by prioritising personal competencies and empowering them to explore their passions and interests.

  • When and where will Discover take place?

Discover takes place on the second floor of the Primary Library every weekday afternoon between 12:20 pm and 2:45 pm. Students are expected to attend five days per week.

  • What age group is Discover for?

Discover is available to students aged 5 to 11 and is designed to be mixed-aged in nature, allowing students to learn collaboratively.

  • What will children learn in Discover?

Discover takes a child-centred, forward-thinking approach to learning that prioritises student agency, personal competencies, and developed passions and interests. This approach focuses on the development of transferable skills and the ability to learn independently, which are essential for the future.

  • What do we mean by student agency?

Student agency is the capacity of students to have a positive impact on their lives and the world around them. It involves setting goals, reflecting on progress, and taking action to effect change. Students who possess agency believe in their ability to act and shape their lives rather than being passive and shaped by external forces. They make responsible decisions and choices rather than merely accepting what is predetermined for them. At BSJ, we believe that fostering student agency is crucial in preparing our students to be active and engaged members of society in the future.

  • What do we mean by personal competencies?

Personal competencies are the transferable skills that we use daily to interact successfully with the world around us. Discover aims to develop a range of competencies such as curiosity, creativity, compassion, critical thinking, collaboration, citizenship, communication and composure, among many others. These skills are highly sought after and essential for success in tertiary education, employment, and within society.

  • Why are passions and interests important?

Discover recognises that personalisation, not standardisation, is the future of education. Discover places students in an environment where their interests and passions are allowed to flourish, fostering a love of learning and maintaining their natural drive and curiosity to understand the world around them.
