BSJ's Primary 'Discover' Programme

Kindergarten Curriculum

Our play-based kindergarten curriculum is designed to provide a nurturing and stimulating learning environment for children aged 2-5 years, with a focus on fostering holistic development. Based on the UK Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Development Matters framework, our curriculum promotes learning through play and exploration, allowing children to develop at their own pace and according to their individual needs.

Language and literacy development is a key component of our curriculum. We use the Letters & Sounds programme to introduce children to early phonics skills, helping them to learn the sounds of the English language and apply this knowledge to reading and writing. We also incorporate two additional programs - Tales Toolkits and Talk 4 Writing - to develop children's writing skills further and foster a love for reading and storytelling.

Our curriculum also emphasises mathematics, themes, and physical development. We use hands-on activities, problem-solving tasks, and games to develop mathematical awareness and knowledge. At the same time, our themes and topics are based on children's interests, such as the natural world, people and communities, and the arts. Physical development is also important, so we include outdoor play and sports to promote motor skills, coordination, and overall well-being.

Kindergarten Year Group Structure

Our kindergarten year group structure at BSJ is designed to be age-appropriate, with each group tailored to the developmental needs of children at different stages of early childhood. We place children according to their date of birth relative to the academic year. 1 September is the start of the academic year, and 31 August is the end of the year. New students are assessed after enrolment to ensure suitable year-round placement. Here are our year groups:

Our Kindergarten curriculum focuses on seven areas of development outlined in the UK EYFS framework, which are divided into three prime areas and four specific areas.

We focus on fostering early learning and development in these areas to help children develop important skills such as self-confidence, social skills, language abilities, and physical coordination.

Prime areas include

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development.

 Specific areas include

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

Our kindergarten curriculum is designed to help children work towards a set of Early Learning Goals across these seven areas of development by providing children with a balanced and comprehensive learning experience that prepares them for success in their future academic and personal endeavours.

BSJ provides a well-rounded education where our Kindergarten students get exposure to music, drama, arts, library, and foreign languages such as Spanish, French, and Mandarin. Our specialist teachers offer Music, Physical Health Education, and Swimming lessons to enhance their learning experience further.

At the end of Kindergarten Two, each child undergoes a comprehensive assessment across the seven areas of learning. Our teachers work closely with the Year 1 team to ensure a smooth and successful transition into Key Stage One.
