Years 1-6: Primary Curriculum

The Primary School curriculum at British School Jakarta (BSJ) for Years 1 to 6 is designed to provide a well-rounded education based on both the English National Curriculum (ENC) and for Maths and English as well as an inquiry-based exploratory framework which covers our foundation subjects.

English and Maths are closely aligned with the English National Curriculum, drawing on best practices from the UK.

The English curriculum covers:

  • Writing (including handwriting, phonics, and spelling)

  • Reading

  • Oracy (speaking)

  • Listening

  • Talk 4 Writing Programme

*We also offer English as an Additional Language (EAL), if support is required.

Our Maths curriculum is structured around different strands of Mathematics, such as:

  • Numbers

  • Measures

  • Geometry

  • Statistics

  • Reasoning

Our focus is on developing mastery in Maths with an emphasis on speed and efficiency, reasoning skills, the ability to explain strategies, and accuracy, all with links to real-life applications.

Our ‘Explore’ framework covers a variety of subjects, including Science, History, Geography, Art, Design Technology, Society, and Digital Literacy, taught through an inquiry-based approach. BSJ has recently introduced a transformation in our Primary School curriculum, departing from the traditional International Primary Curriculum (IPC) model and embracing a dynamic, exploratory approach. This approach encourages students to explore diverse topics, fostering their curiosity and allowing them to pursue their interests. This exploration serves as a foundation for in-depth investigations, enabling them to gain a deeper understanding of their environment and the broader world.

By combining the ENC and our exploratory-based approach, we provide the highest level of education for our Primary students which ensures a seamless transfer to the Secondary curriculum.
